Much of modern day medicine is indebted to irreplaceable animal research. With the need for technically sophisticated, humane and well-considered use of animals in biomedical research, the demand for qualified individuals in the field of laboratory animal science is very high, especially in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology companies. In order to advance within this highly competitive industry, it is essential to have the training advantage that a specialized master's degree provides. Therefore, Eastern Virginia Medical School has launched this new online Master of Laboratory Animal Science Program.
The master’s program builds a solid foundation for a successful career in laboratory animal science. Its courses focus on all aspects of laboratory animal science and animal facility management. The practicum provides the student with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned to the actual practice of laboratory animal science. The program can also improve the standing of those students who desire to advance their training in veterinary medicine for their application to veterinary school.
This program will train the scientists who plan, conduct and evaluate animal experiments and animal facilities by providing them with a high-quality basic science, clinical, statistical and ethics education that enables graduates to design effective experiments while minimizing the number of required animals and adverse effects.
Courses will draw upon EVMS’ broad, in-house expertise in laboratory animal science and will utilize the school’s state-of-the-art facilities. The program will be further enhanced by renowned guest lecturers, allowing participants to be taught both theory and technical skills by experts active at the forefront of this discipline.
The online Master of Laboratory Animal Science program allows maximum flexibility for the student. It is designed for individuals who may be currently working within the field of laboratory animal science, those seeking career advancement, or those looking for opportunities in research laboratories but do not want to relocate to attend traditional master’s programs.
The program has a total of 30 credits in 5 semesters over 2 years. All courses will be online, with one week on campus for hands-on animal training during the summer semester, between years 1 and 2.
The following elements are requirements to be considered for admission into the program:
FOR ALL APPLICANTS
- Bachelors or a graduate degree with a 2.75 GPA or higher from a regionally and nationally accredited U.S. college or university or an international equivalent.
- The program may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
- Successful completion of two semesters each of college-level Biology and Chemistry and one semester of Mathematics.
- Minimum of 3 months or 500 hours of hands-on experience, as described in technical skills is required prior to the start of the first semester.
- A total of 6 months or 1000 hours of verified laboratory animal experience (including the 500 hours of hands-on admission requirement) is a graduation requirement.
- Applicants who desire a future as a Laboratory Animal technologist are strongly encouraged to have full-time experience/employment during the 2 years of the program to be eligible for LAT and LATG certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
- Three letters of reference, one of which must verify the minimum hands-on animal experience requirement.
- Personal statement outlining the applicant's academic and professional goals.
- Computer and computer services with various specifications (See Computer Standards).
FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:
Translation: If the academic institution that you attended does not issue documents in English, the credentialing agency will require that you submit a word-for-word translation of your transcripts. You can contact University Language Services (ULS) at www.universitylanguage.com to submit your transcript for translation and instruct them to send the translated transcript to the credentialing agency you chose.
Transcript Evaluation: International students whose native language is not English may contact one of the following credentialing agencies to submit transcripts for OFFICIAL evaluation. Instruct the credentialing agency to send the OFFICIAL evaluation (and translation) directly to the EVMS Director of Admissions & Enrollment.
NOTE: An OFFICIAL transcript must be submitted to the EVMS Office of Admissions & Enrollment as well as the credentialing agency of your choice.
TOEFL: International applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL exam and receive a score as follows: Paper-based test: 550; Computer-based test: 213; iBT exam: 80. Please go to the ETS website to take the TOEFL exam, and request your TOEFL scores be sent directly to the Office of Admissions & Enrollment School of Health Professions. ETS reports scores for two years after the test date. If you have previously taken the TOEFL but the two-year period has expired, the program will accept a personal copy if available.
Students in the program earn a Biomedical Science Master's degree with a specialty in Laboratory Animal Medicine in two years. Our objective is to provide the biomedical research community with skilled individuals in laboratory animal science who can fulfill needed positions in research and animal care facilities immediately upon graduation.
With new and more restrictive animal protection guidelines, the scientific and research industries urgently need highly qualified personnel to lead and manage their laboratory animal research activities in a highly competent manner. Many exciting opportunities exist including those in academia, industry (biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies), and government. Laboratory animal experts are involved in veterinary care, teaching, animal resource management, refinement of animal models, development of alternatives to animals in research, and independent research.
