Introduction
Our faculty members maintain NIH-funded research programs directed at understanding important issues related to viruses, bacteria, and the immune system. We are experiencing an unprecedented expansion, including the addition of new faculty members, the doubling of our postdoctoral program, the award of more than $22.9 million by an NIH grant to establish and maintain the Center for Molecular and Tumor Virology, and the growth of our nationally recognized training program for graduate students.
The Emerging Viral Threat Lab was established using the expertise of the Department to provide testing on the front line of the COVID-19 epidemic. The EVT lab is also working to obtain complete genome sequences of the viruses from samples in cooperation with nationwide and international efforts to better understand the virus, enable molecular epidemiology work, such as contact tracing, and to inform future vaccine efforts. LSU Health Shreveport is currently the sole academic center in Louisiana with this portfolio of capabilities.
