Biochemistry and pathobiochemistry deals mainly with biochemical and molecular biological problems of biomacromolecules, i.e. proteins and enzymes, lipids and nucleic acids, as well as their structural and other important low-molecular substances in nutrient systems. The aim of the study also clarifies their mutual substance metabolism and their role in the regulation of life processes such as hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors, receptors, antibodies, signal molecules etc.

A very important field is also research into biological membranes, membrane transporters, subcellular components, energy transformations, extracellular matrix and the role of the second messengers in cell regulation. The research focused on the role of free radicals in terms of their action as mutagens, on the research of other toxic agents for nucleic acids and biomembranes and on the research of carcinogenesis and atherogenesis.
