Introduction

With global life expectancy rising rapidly, healthcare systems urgently need to improve. By bridging the gaps between the design and problem-solving skills of traditional engineering and the medical and biological sciences, biomedical engineering can play a vital role in that journey. And when combined with progress and developments in the field of IT, a new world of possibilities in how health care can be improved and delivered is emerging.

This master's program will provide you with an internationally competitive education, giving you the knowledge and know-how necessary to prepare for a hugely rewarding career in the field. The program will prepare you to use engineering skills to improve health care delivery and medical practice. The focus is on biomedical engineering, but you will also have a good platform for working in other related engineering disciplines.

The future of health care will demand technical expertise. Examples, of where biomedical engineering skills are needed, are numerous, from microwave technologies used in stroke detection and brain monitoring, to microwave tomography for 3D breast tumour detection and visualization. Another application is textile-based sensors, which can record electrical activity from the body for monitoring in-home care and other remote settings. Health informatics is another area with a real need for biomedical engineers.

The compulsory elements of this program serve as a common foundation within biomedical engineering, while the broad range of elective courses available, covering topics such as medical imaging technology, electronics, and signal processing, will allow you to specialize and achieve the proficiency and depth required for a Master's degree.

In general, education places a specific emphasis on building and refining problem-solving and presentation skills, and teamwork. The Master’s thesis gives you training in individual research, project planning, documentation, and presentation. You will also have excellent opportunities to meet and learn from experts and professionals active in the healthcare industry, through guest lectures and study visits.
