Bachelor of Nursing

Program goals:

The objective of the program is to promote effective operation of the healthcare system by educating of qualified and highly competent nurses. By offering program-integrated theoretical and practical courses, the program will allow graduates to acquire basic knowledge of nursing theory and methodology, develop clinical skills, ability to adapt to changing requirements, pursue life-long learning and continuous professional development, as a result of which a nurse will be able to carry on independent professional activity. Graduates of the Nursing program can be employed by medical preventive institutions with different profiles (emergency aid, resuscitation, surgery, therapy, urology, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology), hospices, non-governmental organizations, ethical committees, etc. Methods for Attaining Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

Graduates will be able to:

• Knowledge of social, healthcare and behavioral sciences;
• Knowledge of all stages of nursing intervention (prevention, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and paleatic intervention) and their alternative versions;
• Understanding nurse’s functions and responsibilities, his/her role in the policy, system, and functions of health and social care;
• Knowledge of contemporary medical technologies and methods;
• Knowledge of the research principles relevant to the target sphere;
• Understanding of the necessity to deliver complete, unbiased and timely information to the patient.
• Understanding of the impact of political and social contexts on the provision of healthcare;

Applying knowledge

Graduates will be able to:

• assess the patient’s state based on the situation analysis within professional competence and rights, particularly, the ability to identify the patient’s needs, carry out health risks assessment and complications as well as plan and deliver care; ability to properly plan, implement and deliver effective preventive activities;
• lead the team as well as be an effective team member;
• assess arguments and make evidence-based decisions;
• carry out nursing manipulations;
• safely use medicines, drugs, and other therapeutic means;
• properly use social, healthcare and behavioral sciences in nursing practice;
• keep medical records, including electronic versions, using informational technologies;
• use modern medical technologies and methods;
• advocate and respect the patient’s dignity, and keep confidentiality;
• plan and carry out supervised research relevant to nursing (case-study, experiment, observation); apply research results in practical nursing.

Making judgments

Graduates will be able to:

• retrieve, define, synthesize, and analyze data and information requisite to specific problem-solving by standard and specific methods, make evidence-based conclusions within professional competence;
• analyze the situations associated with various ethical and medical/care issues;
• analyze emergent decisions, situational and thematic issues related to all the spheres of professional activity;
• make use of technologies requisite to relevant intervention based on the analysis of the situation, etc.
• demonstrate effective critique skills in evaluating circumstances to determine appropriate nursing intervention;
• determine the effects of Healthcare policies on care delivery;
• evaluate strategies used to promote partnership working with patients and families;
• evaluate the impact of ICT on care delivery and management;
• demonstrate challenge nursing care allowing for the dynamic social, cultural, legal, political and economic factors affecting care delivery;

Communications skills

Graduates will be able to:

• communicate orally in several languages (including Georgian) to healthcare professionals and medical personnel the information on the issues related to healthcare system and nursing; design written documents, make presentations and give opposing viewpoints in English;
• inform and educate both orally and in writing, patients, family member, and society at large, including persons with communication disorders;
• communicate innovations and advancements related to nursing competences in health and welfare, using information and communication technologies, presentations, internet resources;
• disseminate advancements and innovations related to nursing in digital and printed libraries, journals and internet resources.

Learning skills

Graduate will be able to:

• accept healthcare-related scientific and technological innovations and constantly renew knowledge and skills;
• identify observation and needs-assessment based professional problems and improve qualification, gain appropriate materials and use multi-languaged (including Georgian) digital and printed libraries, journals and internet resources;
• identify the needs for lifelong professional development by attending appropriate short-term, refresh and certificate courses or by continuing studies on postgraduate level.

Values

Graduate will be able to:

• requirements of professional, ethical and legal codes (both local and international);
• patient and medical personnel rights;
• necessity to support and foster recognition of new values on the basis of analyzing current situation and reevaluating established professional, ethical and legal values;
• the rights of the experimental subject in the process of medical examination;
• the necessity to respect cultural, personal, racial, language, ethnic, religious peculiarities.
