Experienced professionals help secure your success

The Distance and Independent Studies Center (DISC) is one of the leading establishments in Germany for distance-learning postgraduate courses. The establishment has over 25 years of experience in developing and designing academic courses for guided self-study. It was created by the Centre for Distance Learning and University Education (ZFUW), which was founded at the University of Kaiserslautern in 1992.

  • We offer accredited Master's degrees in attractive subject areas and
accompany you throughout your course of studies with advice, service and support.

Independent study

The concept of independent learning is key to the philosophy of the DISC.

  • We strengthen the self-study skills of our students and support the University of Kaiserslautern through the development of self-study modules to help create a culture of lifelong learning.
  • In doing so, we not only make an important contribution to students at the University of Kaiserslautern developing professional competence but also help them become experts in independent learning.

Study from anywhere in the world

Around 4,200 graduates are currently using the courses offered by the DISC to boost their career - a figure that no other comparable distance learning institute in Germany can match. The students come from all over Germany, neighboring German-speaking countries, yet also from overseas, for example during stays in China, India or the USA.

Training with a high success rate

80% of participants in DISC distance learning degrees successfully complete their course. This high success rate is based on the combination of respected and renowned directors of study with a strong practical orientation, first-class didactic study material, online seminars and the reliable study support provided by the DISC's staff.

University of Kaiserslautern

Future-oriented courses of study, practical real-world training and a modern infrastructure are the framework conditions that students can expect to find at the University of Kaiserslautern. Since its foundation in 1970, the only university in the Rhineland-Palatinate with a technical and engineering focus has earned an enviable reputation and can more than hold its own against the established technical universities.

The award presented to the University of Kaiserslautern in October 2009 in the "Excellence in Teaching" competition, honouring the establishment as one of only six winning universities in Germany, is living proof of the high standard of teaching on offer.

As a campus university with around 14,000 students (some 4,000 of whom are distance learning students), it offers over 100 future-oriented, practice-based courses of study in twelve departments. Its easily manageable size also guarantees students close contact to professors and outstanding student support.

In addition to this, students benefit from the numerous renowned research institutes, including two Fraunhofer Institutes, one Max Planck Institute, the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Institute for Composite Materials (IVW), all of which are located either on or near the campus and collaborate closely with the university in the field of applied research.

In January 2010, the University of Kaiserslautern and the institutes IESE, ITWM, DFKI and the ITA won two of a total of five awards in the top cluster competition held by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Two research centers were established at the University of Kaiserslautern in mid-2008 with the aim of setting up major, coordinated research ventures, including special areas of research, and successfully winning project funding within the scope of national and international measures promoting excellence.

Expert partner for the use of medical equipment

To run their medical equipment, hospitals, clinics, and large practices require specialists fully trained in the basics of modern medicine and operation of high-tech medical devices. This opens up a highly interesting field of work for engineers or scientists that are also trained in medical physics. Their solid university education just needs to be supplemented with the necessary interdisciplinary specialist knowledge in medicine and physics here.

This makes them the ideal partner for physicians using high-grade medical equipment. Alongside potential for working at medical facilities, further fields of application include research and development of medical equipment and procedures, testing, monitoring, and maintenance, as well as sales, training, etc....
